Description: nearing VF. These two counterstamps are generally applied to opposites sides of the coin, however, it appears as if the wheel counterstamp was applied over the VAR counterstamp. Publius Quinctilius Varus, Roman General under Augustus and governor of Germania, was defeated in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in AD 9, where the Roman army was ambushed by Germanic tribes led by Arminius, a chiefton with Roman military training. Legions XVII, XVIII and XIX were decimated and Varus committed suicide before he could be captured alive.
