Norman. Stephen (1135-1154). Voided Cross and Mullets type. [Al?]wine, moneyer AR Penny $285.00

sold

Attribution: North 878; SCBC 1280; SCBI 18 (Copenhagen); cf. Mack 63 Uncertain (Pevensey?) mint
Date: 1145-1150
Obverse: Crowned bust facing slightly left, holding scepter
Reverse: Voided cross; mullets in quarters
Size: 19.67mm
Weight: 1.24 grams
Rarity: 7
Description: Fine, toned, scrapes under tone on reverse, areas of flat strike making moneyer and mint only conjectural. Barring an exact die match, the stylistic affinities of the Mack coin suggest that the mint of this coin is Pevensey, and the moneyer is Alwine. Ex CNG Electronic Auction 445 (5 June 2019), Lot 722 (sold for $140 plus fees) with tag.
