Roman Republic. Anonymous. Pb Sextans / Cockle Shell $215.00

Date: circa 240 BC
Obverse: Cockle Shell design
Reverse: Smooth
Size: 33x27mm
Weight: 49.62 grams
Rarity: 5
Description: VF and exceptional for the type. Because of the fairly common occurrence of these on the market over the years, it seems reasonable to assume that they were used as a medium of trade or currency. They are certainly not Aes Grave, Aes Rude or Aes Formatum for the simple reason that they are made of lead and not Aes (bronze). That said, they may very well be a smaller and lighter imitation of a rare and early Aes Formatum type. The weights seem to indicate a production contemporary to the Aes Grave series, circa 240 BC.
